We are a small but vocal group of community members who do not wish to see the MacLeod-Rice House be allowed to crumble. We are neighbors who grew up near the house, recent residents to the area, commuters who drive past everyday, visitors who come to the grounds during Middletown Day, kids who participate in the sports held there, their cheering parents, seniors who spend their days at the senior center behind the house, alumni of Croydon Hall Academy who remember their school days there, people who appreciate grand architecture, and anyone who will not stand by and allow another piece of local history to be torn down for the sake of "more parking"!
The MacLeod-Rice House sits in the middle of the Croydon Hall complex, off of Leonardville Road [Rte. 516] in the Leonardo section of Middletown Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey. It is a showpiece for the Township and should be renovated to reflect the community's pride. The possibilities for the house range from being a Welcome Center to offices for the community's wide variety of non-profit organizations to its continuing use as a museum and research library that reflect the rich history of Middletown Township.
The central location of the house, surrounded by athletic fields, the senior center, social services offices, and the Parks & Recretaion offices makes it an ideal building to renovate and reuse.
There are unlimited adaptive reuse possibilities for the MacLeod-Rice House - we want the Township to start thinking creatively! The house is a positive aspect, not a detriment, to the community - in fact, Middletown Day, the annual event that celebrates all that the Township has to offer, has been held on the grounds there for over 10 years.
It's time for the Township to start thinking outside the box and take advantage of all that the MacLeod-Rice House can offer the community!
